April is Youth Month!

All month long we are focused on getting kids and teens familiar with the concepts of saving and spending wisely. We truly believe that talking about money should start as soon as kids understand plunking pennies into a piggy bank.

As kids get older and have their own money, whether it’s from a birthday, babysitting, or their first part-time job, it’s important that they learn how to operate their own account.

To get them excited about banking, we’re running a special promotion for kids and teen accounts this month!

Kids Savings Account - ages

Money FCU’s teen checking with a debit card offers some unique benefits:

We like to keep things simple. None of our accounts have monthly fees, maintenance charges, or minimum balances you have to maintain outside of the $5 required for membership.

We know every penny counts, so we’ll match your deposit up to their age every year until they turn 13. If you start depositing as soon as they’re born, you’ll have an extra $75 in their savings when they turn 13!

Kids also get a fun club newsletter to help them stay involved and learn more about basic banking principles! The newsletter and fun activities help children learn financial literacy. Plus, every child gets a free gift when opening a savings account. This is our little way of saying thank you to our smallest members.

Teen Checking and Savings Account (age 13-19)

The youth savings and optional checking account comes with joint ownership and monitoring capabilities so you can see how much their savings is growing and where their money is going.

The youth savings account offers the ability to add a checking account with a free debit card and optional spending limits. That way, they can never overspend. Carrying a debit card gives your teen the basic idea of spending freedom but still has some limitations to keep them in check.

The youth account has all the benefits of a regular savings account, including mobile deposits and the use of the mobile app. Your teen receives free e-statements and all of the same online banking options as our regular adult accounts have.

We like to keep things simple. None of our accounts have monthly fees, maintenance charges, or minimum balances you have to maintain outside of the $5 required for membership.

As your teen gets older, you may want to begin teaching them good spending habits. With our free checking account, you’re able to set spending limits on their debit card, monitor their activity, and teach them early on about managing money.

The best benefit by far from a teen’s youth account is Money FCU’s college scholarship opportunity. The college scholarship program is a chance to win additional funding for college and educational expenses. With this one application, you have two scholarship opportunities. The first scholarship is Money FCU’s scholarship award opportunity. Secondly, we submit your application automatically to a statewide competition through the New York Credit Union Association. We announce winners for both awards in early spring. Scholarships are paid jointly to the student and their school for funding tuition, room and board, books, supplies, and other miscellaneous educational expenses.

Credit union will match first deposit to a new teen checking account that also signs up for a debit card, up to $50; up to $25 for a new kids/teen savings only.
